Taiwan’s woodworking machinery sector is up to the challenge of new trends

Source: Taiwantrade | Updated: 15 October 2021

With the impact of the pandemic and globalization, the woodworking machinery industry faces changes and new trends. But the giants of Taiwan’s woodworking machinery industry are not afraid of the challenges. They have not just balanced product positioning of quality, cost and delivery, but also smart controls and integrated equipment to provide the customer with smart solutions while at the same time moving towards a more environmentally friendly and energy-saving trend.

Amid pandemic depression, the woodworking machinery industry bucks the trend

In 2020, global woodworking machinery exports amounted to around US$7.39 billion with Germany in first place, followed by China and Italy. Taiwan was fourth in the global woodworking machinery export rankings, with exports last year worth around US$710 million. That accounted for 9.6% of global exports, and represented annual growth of 21.5% over 2019. This year the export value for the whole year could reach another peak, with impressive industry performance. The mainstay of Taiwan’s woodworking machinery exports is sawing machines, which account for 50.8% of total exports, followed by planers, milling machines and woodworking CNC machining centers. Taiwan's main export markets are, in order, the US, China, Canada, Vietnam and Germany.

Around the world, lockdowns due to the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns have also increased demand for home improvement, which has been beneficial to Taiwan’s manufacturers of woodworking machinery. In 2021, the industry’s output value and export value both showed growth of 20% and above compared to last year. The industry is even more optimistic regarding the market for 2022, predicting that exports will increase quarter by quarter. Leadermac Machinery’s integrated automated equipment, such as its smart-control four-sided planers, streamline costs and raise production efficiency to flip the declining global economic trend and create new opportunities for the industry.

No fear of labor shortages, Taiwan’s whole-line automated equipment is ready to go

As the world heads towards economic globalization, the changes to employment demographics have made unemployment issues ever more serious for many countries. This phenomenon has affected the productivity of many businesses, with a lack of labor, and the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic has made the impact of these challenges even greater. However, Taiwan’s woodworking machinery manufacturers already have many years of cooperation experience from joining forces to form the W-Team, and with integrated smart production lines that can streamline manpower by 400%, Taiwan’s manufacturers have no worries even faced with a serious human resources shortfall in the global woodworking machinery industry.

Taiwan’s W-Team alliance has integrated core technologies from start to finish, bringing together experts in every area in a strategic alliance, while at the same time retaining each manufacturer’s core technological features. So while each of Taiwan’s manufacturers specializes in a single woodworking technology, together they can combine to provide customers with planning services for an entire plant. On W-Team 6‘s veneer processing line, the crossfeed veneer splicer can complete 15 to 20 splices per minute, higher than the international norm, while the new laminating process from W-Team 10’s fire doors automatic assembly line reduces lamination time from 3 days to 40 seconds. The yields of the two production lines have both increased by over 95%. When Innovator’s smart automated veneer processing line came into being, it combined Innovator’s own veneer splicing technology with international veneer cutting technology, real-time production line monitoring and Package Plant Export capability that greatly increases product quality and allows the customer to quickly set up a smart production system.

Protecting resources and the environment are key to the woodworking machinery industry’s survival

In the future, in addition to continuing the development of whole-line automation from the technology side, environmental awareness is also an important trend for the whole world. The global woodworking machinery industry is moving towards raising wood processing precision, material utilization rate, production efficiency and automated processes, developing in the direction of saving energy, being environmentally friendly, safe and without pollution. Performance issues like reducing secondary procedures, material handling time and waste will be even more to the forefront.
Wood architecture has also been very popular in recent years. In addition to the material’s natural aesthetic beauty, wood’s many advantages as a material -- it is hardwearing; wooden structures are quiet and non-polluting to build; it is lightweight, economic and saves energy -- are leading the new trend for green buildings towards the woodworking machinery industry. Taiwan’s companies are also actively moving in the eco-friendly direction. The smart scanning function of Kuang Yung’s optimizing movable rip saw system can automatically judge size, avoid defects and get the best material acquisition rate, effectively saving on manpower, increasing capacity and saving on wood consumption costs, finally reaching the goals of saving energy and reducing carbon emissions.

Taiwan shows its skills in the woodworking machinery industry, mastering smart production technology, helping to reach environmental sustainability goals and leading the world towards a new, green, future. Taiwan, your intelligent partner.
